Emma via iPad
Back when we were doing Paperkids, I tried a few times to get some video of Emma typing, but it wasn’t always so easy. It seems like there’s rarely a good time to sit down and try to get it recorded what with all the many distractions. It’s tough for Emma because one sentence can take a while so it’s hard when there are the constant interruptions of a busy household.
I put this together during a particularly chaotic session last year and it’s really more like an outtakes reel. Between my giggles, Jared’s poor directing (had to say it babe) and Hayden’s never-ending requests, it was probably the worst conditions for trying to get a video! Yet, even amidst all the craziness, Emma is still somehow able to express her thoughts in that uniquely simple and profound way.

So much said in so few words! Emma, we are truly blessed by those words. Are we preparers of treasures in heaven? That question is food for soul-seaching thought. And btw; that chaotic noise surrounding you is music to a grandmother’s ears who misses all the laughter and loudness.

Jared, I don’t know if you would even remember me. It’s been decades! I have kept up with your lives vicariously through Vera and Suzanne. I can remember you, Jared, as a rascal of a kid who stayed occasionally at my house when your Mom was in school.
First of all, it’s really terribly professional–your video and slideshows.
The children are absolutely beautiful. How amazing of Emma to communicate as she does. And the poetry–I can hardly believe it. It seems like there is a genius in there. It makes me think of Stephen Hawken. He was lecturing (should I use that word?) at Cal Tech a couple of weeks ago. Everything he said was on video. In answering questions he pointed to some prescripted words for short answers. It makes me wonder what possible genius is in Emma.
And then there is this woman, whose name I can’t remember–she is well known. Was interviewed on NPR. She has (or do you say had) autism but went on to acquire even her doctoratre. She works and lectures. Makes one wonder what Emma can achieve with her potential.
I have thought of you both and Emma and Hayden over the years. Your children are very lucky to have the two of you. Obviously they could hardly have more nuturing parents.

Thank you so much for your comment and kind words! Jared absolutely remembers you. I am so glad to be able to share Emma’s poetry and I know that it can help some people who maybe need a little extra hope that their kid can someday communicate. That’s what helped me! I have thought of Stephen Hawken a few times. And I think that Temple Grandin might be the woman you mentioned. She is so inspiring. Thanks again so much!
I just simply adore the way Emma hums and the depth with which she looks at you Sabra. So much going on behind those eyes. So special.
Your videos always make me laugh and cry (not sad tears, perhaps awed tears, I’m not sure).
And it really did sound like Emma said those letters 😀 So cool!
